Back Tor takes top honours at Leek as Dutch Spotted females meet strong demand

The Dutch Spotted Sheep Society returned to Leek Auction Mart for its second annual Show and Sale on Friday 11th September, with 65 sheep catalogued and another strong show of Dutch Spotted sheep forward.

Taking centre stage was Back Tor Ilona, a shearling ewe from Jack and Steph Simpson’s Back Tor flock, Hope Valley. Ilona was tapped out Overall Champion and Female Champion by judge Adam Mitchell, Spruit flock before going on to lead the day’s trade at 900gns, purchased by the Judge

It proved an excellent day for the Back Tor flock, who also secured the Reserve Overall Championship and Male Championship with shearling ram Back Tor Init, which went on to sell for 750gns. Their strong run continued with shearling ewe Back Tor Ivanna at 700gns.

Demand was strong throughout the shearling ewe section, with the Kilcroft flock of Alderley Edge enjoying an excellent trade. Kilcroft Isabella sold for 850gns, while Kilcroft Imelda followed closely behind at 820gns. Further females from the Kilcroft pen realised 700gns and 600gns, adding to a strong day for the flock.

The ewe lamb section also attracted plenty of interest. Leading the prices was Smallwood Jilly from Emily Nicholls, Smallwood, selling for 650gns. First prize ewe lamb and Reserve Female Champion, Fachwen Jean Jeanie, from A Breese, Tregynon, realised 600gns. Emma Webster and Jack Hall’s Sutton Manor flock also enjoyed a good run in the ewe lamb section, with Sutton Manor Jiggle Wiggle selling for 600gns.

There was plenty of interest in the males too. Away from the Reserve Overall Champion at 750gns, Dovedale Impeccable from Lucy Miller, Ramshorn, also sold for 750gns, while stablemate Dovedale I’m a Gambler realised 700gns.

Ram lambs reached 550gns, led by Park Hills Jack Rabbit from M Tomlinson and Master R Tomlinson, Muggington.

The Society’s second sale at Leek once again attracted support from breeders and buyers across the region and further afield, with a particularly buoyant demand for quality females.

The Dutch Spotted Sheep Society would like to thank all vendors and purchasers for their continued support, and the team at Leek Auction Mart for their work in hosting the Society’s second Show and Sale at the venue.

With a quality entry, a competitive pre-sale show and good demand throughout the sale ring, the event marked another successful outing for the Dutch Spotted breed at Leek.
