Dutch Spotted Lead the Way at Melton Mowbray
Dutch Spotted sheep topped the entire multibreed sale once again at Melton Mowbray, recording the highest price of the day across all breeds when the Overall Breed Champion, Tiptop Jordan, a ewe lamb from Ali Jackson, Dumfriesshire, sold for 1,650gns. Jordan had earlier been tapped out as Overall Breed Champion by judge Derfel Harries of the Tywi Valley flock, Carmarthenshire and she sold to Erin McKinley of the Newton Heights flock, Cumbria. Jordan was purchased as a birthday present and now heads north to join Erin’s flock of 40 pure-breeding ewes.
Females continued to feature among the leading prices, with two shearling ewes from Gemma Stanford’s Spruit flock, Leicestershire, each selling for the next highest price of 900gns. Spruit Islay was knocked down at 900gns to Tom Buckland of the McLaren flock, Caerphilly, while flockmate Spruit I’m Yours matched her at 900gns, selling to Richard Laban of the Spotted flock, Leicestershire.
Leading the male trade was shearling tup Tiptop Infinite Wisdom, a grandson of Tiptop Diana. He realised 800gns for Ali Jackson, selling to J&G White of the Colne Valley flock, Huddersfield. Following closely at 780gns was the Reserve Male Champion, Kelby I-Am-A-Sheep, from Tom Mawer, Lincolnshire. He found a new home with C Bustance, Spalding.
While trade across the sale was more selective than in previous years, the strongest sheep continued to find willing buyers, with the leading prices demonstrating continued demand for quality. Purchases heading to Cumbria, South Wales, Yorkshire and across the Midlands also reflected interest from breeders across a wide geographical area.
